The Social Security Administration (SSA) Warns Public About New Social Security Advisory Board Impersonation Scam
The Inspector General of Social Security is warning people about a new kind of government employee impersonation scam. Individuals are receiving scam phone calls displaying the Security Advisory Board’s phone number on caller ID. The scammers attempt to obtain personal information, including Social Security numbers.
The scammers use tricks similar to impersonation schemes involving the IRS, SSA, and the SSA OIG. They may use a variety of false scenarios or threats to obtain personal information or payments, often requested through gift cards or prepaid debit cards.
If you receive this type of call, do not engage with the caller or provide any personal information or money. Report the call to the OIG online at https://oig.ssa.gov/report or call (800) 269-0271.
